What type of organizations do you support?

Research in volunteerism proves that a commitment to a cause is one of the top reasons that volunteers continue to be involved in their communities, and as a result TVB’s partner agencies tackle a wide array of challenges that exist in Toronto. We think charities that help seniors, children, disadvantaged members of our community, new Canadians or those dealing with debilitating conditions, and non-profit environmentally-minded organizations, each deserve our help. Also, we find that the more variety in volunteering opportunities we can provide, the better service we can provide to our aspiring volunteers.

How did you pick your charities? How can a charity get on your list?

We picked charities that we thought represented great causes, and could accommodate the busy schedules that so many of us face. Many of them sought us out, once they learned about TVB. So if you have a great idea for a new TVB partner, or know of a charity that is having a one-time volunteering event, please email us and tell us about it!

How do I become a volunteer?

Simply sign up using our on-line form, register for our newsletter, or contact us and we’ll contact you to tell you about some great volunteering opportunities that we know about and are getting involved in ourselves.

Can I select the charity and the type of work that I will do?

Absolutely. Some charities are looking for manual labour (which can be a great of unwinding at the end of a tough week); others are looking for specific skills that you might have. We don’t pressure anyone into doing volunteer work that isn’t what they’re interested in doing. We’re interested in having you come back again and again, support our partners, come to more of our “one-off” events, and tell your friends and family about the great things that we’re doing together.

What is the time commitment?

The time commitment is whatever you’re willing to commit to. We don’t pressure you into doing more than you feel comfortable with. We don’t harass you when something comes up at the last minute and you can’t make an event. That’s why we promote casual, “one-off” events, in addition to the regular volunteering roles with our partner agencies. Now, we don’t want you to shirk your commitments to our partners once you make them, but that’s up to you to decide.

Can I volunteer for TVB itself?

Yes! We’re trying to help people like you find great volunteering opportunities. We need dedicated people to help us contact potential volunteers, organize volunteering and social events, coordinate with our partners, coordinate our technology infrastructure, and fundraise. Contact us to let us know that you’re interested in joining our team.

How is TVB structured?

TVB has six “departments”: Marketing, Volunteer Management, Agency Management, Event Management, Technology, and Administration. We’re always in need of more people to help us grow and spread the word about TVB. Please let us know if you’re interested in joining the TVB team by contacting us.

Is TVB a charity itself?

Yes, TVB was recently granted charitable status by the Canada Revenue Agency. Any donations made to Toronto Volunteer Bridge will be given a tax receipt. You can see our listing here.

What do you do with my personal information?

Your personal information is protected by us under the terms of our Privacy Policy, and we hereby commit to only use the information you disclose to us for purposes of contacting you, by us, to tell you about volunteering opportunities, upcoming events, and other TVB matters. We will not disclose your personal information to anyone outside TVB, for any reason.

How often will TVB communicate with me?

We will be sending e-mail updates to you approximately once each month, and occasional event reminders for those events that you have signed up for. We know what it’s like to have your e-mail inbox clogged with spam, and we don’t ever want to overwhelm you with needless messaging.

I can’t volunteer now – how can I learn what’s going on a few months from now?

No problem if you’re in the middle of a project, personal crisis, etc. We understand – that’s us too, from time to time! We’ll keep e-mailing you news and keeping in touch, and when you’re available, we know you’ll get involved. Also, be sure to keep coming back to our website – we hope you’ll bookmark us and keep returning to see what’s new regularly.

Does it matter if I’m not a “young professional”, or am not 23-35?

No. We’re very inclusive, and would never turn away from helping someone get more involved in the community. We’re simply targeting a sub-set of the population that has been traditionally less involved in volunteering, and trying to create a casual, socially-inviting environment for people who generally come from the “young professional” community.

Does it matter if I’m still a student?

Nope, for all the same reasons as we’ve outlined above.

How can I talk to someone at TVB?

You can reach us in a number of ways. Send us e-mail or come out to one of our social events and meet us in person!

How can I donate to TVB? How will my money be used by TVB?

You can soon donate online, but for now you may mail a cheque made out to "Toronto Volunteer Bridge" to Toronto Volunteer Bridge, 2400-250 Yonge Street, Toronto, ON, M5B 2M6, Attn: Lynn Atkinson. Your money will be put to use in ensuring that the TVB mission is fulfilled by paying for general organizational costs, including full-time program staff and promotional efforts.
