October 14, 2007 :: Toronto International Marathon
 The Canadian Diabetes Association (TEAM DIABETES) is looking for enthusiastic individuals to support our water station at this year's Toronto International Marathon. Our water station will be set up close to University Avenue and Richmond Street. Duties will include preparing/distributing water to participants and cheering them on as they complete the beginning and then the final stretch of the marathon. The event will take place on Sunday October 14th, and volunteer check in time will be at approximately 7:30am. Volunteers will be finished at approximately 2pm. Some volunteers may be able to leave at noon. More details will follow! Please be prepared for cool weather in the am, warm weather in the pm, and bring your sunscreen/hats etc!

Sept 21, 2007 :: Yonge Street Mission
TVB volunteers spent the evening of Thursday Sept 21 at the Yonge Street Mission helping with their Thursday Community Dinner. These dinners are part of a community-building and meal program that serves homeless and rooming house people, as well as others from Regent Park. On Thursday evenings, about 100 people from the neighbourhood usually attend. TVB volunteers helped by preparing and serving dinner, and then cleaning up afterwards. The evening finished with a heated ping pong game in the lounge!

June 27, 2007 :: Spadina Quay Wetland Celebration
TVB got together for planting and weed-pulling at the only wetland on Toronto's central waterfront, as we celebrated ten years of restoration and stewardship successes with TBI's founder and President Joanna Kidd. To read more about TBI, go to http://www.torontobay.net/events.html.

June 22, 2007 :: Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life
The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life is a celebration of survival and a tribute to the lives of loved ones who have been touched by cancer. The Relay For Life Team welcomed TVB volunteers at Forest Hill Memorial Park on Friday, June 22, from 10am-5pm to help set up the Luminaries around the track.
Luminaries are special candles that are placed in bags and carry the names of cancer survivors and loved ones lost. In a moving ceremony after sunset, luminaries placed around the track are lit In Honour of cancer survivors and In Memory of those who have lost the battle against cancer. The luminaries provide light and inspiration for participants as they walk around the track.

June 9 & 10, 2007 :: Second Harvest's Hot Ticket: Toronto Taste
Second Harvest held its annual fundraiser, Toronto Taste, and they needed volunteers to succeed! The event was a hot ticket and over 50 of Toronto’s top chefs showcased their culinary skills. They needed TVB volunteers for set-up, catering, selling raffle tickets, and many other things.

June 3, 2007 :: Help Best Buddies Canada® Deliver Royal Ascot Hospitality at the Woodbine Racetrack!
Best Buddies Canada is a national charitable organization dedicated to enhancing our community through one-to-one friendships between individuals with intellectual disabilities and students.
Each year Best Buddies Canada relies on Toronto area fundraising events to support its programs in high schools and universities across Canada. On Sunday, June 3rd from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., TVB sent out a group of four (4) volunteers to help organizers set up for Best Buddies Canada's 2nd Annual "The Thrill of ASCOT" in the Woodbine private trackside tent. Volunteers were welcome to stay for the festivities (12 p.m. to 4 p.m.) and enjoyed royal ascot hospitality at the Woodbine Race Track.

June 1 & 2, 2007 :: Help Bring HOPE to Charities in Toronto!
For the last 18 years, HOPE ("Helping Other People Everywhere) has been raising money for small, but essential Toronto charities that might otherwise be overlooked, by hosting an annual volleyball tournament on Olympic Island (sub-island of Centre Island, across the Toronto harbour). This year, we helped to put on the 19th annual tournament, which was scheduled for June 2. The tournament hosted more than 400 teams of varying ability, and relied on sponsorship, team pledges, food/drink sales to raise money for the charities that benefitted at the end of the day.

May 5, 2007 :: Help Plan Canada to make connections between Canadians and sponsored children
Saturday May 5th, we invited you to join a team of fun, interesting and dynamic individuals to make connections between Canadians and sponsored children and families worldwide.
Letters and pictures are the mainstay of Plan Canada's work. These long distance exchanges can be the most fulfilling part of sponsorship — for both the children and their sponsors. Over the years, Plan has witnessed countless friendships develop and evolve through the mail. Packages, postcards, drawings, photographs and letters help to break down cultural barriers, build a child's confidence and create genuine bonds that last a lifetime.
And TVB was there to help make this happen!

April 22, 2007 :: Earth Day 2007!
TVB headed to Downsview Park for the annual tree-planting festival. Throughout the day we ran various activities that catered to many different age groups. The enthusiastic individuals of TVB volunteered their time and helped us to make sure this event ran as smoothly as possible!

Peacemakers International
Peacebuilders International is a non-profit organization that provides training in conflict prevention, management and resolution through Peacemaking Circles. The Peacemaking Circle is a group dialogue process with two highly trained facilitators; participants are encouraged to listen to others, step into their shoes, share their experiences, and work towards a common goal. The Circle is an extremely effective tool and creates a safe space for people to have difficult but respectful conversations. Here in Toronto, Peacemakers has recently completed two successful pilot projects to assist young offenders (who have accepted responsibility for their actions) get out of the criminal justice system, and instead move towards rehabilitation and reintegration back into the community in a positive manner.

June 10 & 11 :: Second Harvest "Toronto Taste"
The Toronto Taste fundraiser for Second Harvest flew to the north end of the city and landed at Downsview Park - The Hangar. Participants savoured the enticing creations of 70 top chefs and sipped outstanding regional and international wines, beers and spirits all under one roof. And TVB was there to help make it happen!

May 28 :: Come Join TVB Down On the Beach and Help the Down Syndrome Association of Toronto
On Sunday, May 28, 2006, the Down Syndrome Association of Toronto hosted its 20th Annual Down In The Beach Family and Friends Walk to raise funds to further its great work – and TVB volunteers helped make the event a success!

April 22 :: Earth Day at Downsview Park
Saturday, April 22nd, 2006 was Earth Day! All of Toronto was out celebrating at Downsview Park at the 6th Annual Tree Planting Festival.

February 7 :: "Raise the Roof" by Selling Toques!
TVB helped out Raising the Roof, Canada's only national homelessness charity, by selling toques down in the Path (likely near Union or King Subway stations.

December 26 :: The Stop Community Food Centre
TVB members got in one last opportunity to volunteer in 2005 at the Toronto Zoo. The Stop Community Food Centre has been fighting hunger in Toronto for more than 30 years. The Zoo offered free admission in exchange for a food donation. TVB members helped out by collecting the donations as people entered.

December 3 :: Habitat for Humanity
Toronto Volunteer Bridge and Habitat for Humanity teamed up to make a difference in the lives of families in need right here in Toronto.

September 25:: ScotiaBank Toronto Waterfront Marathon for Charity
TVB volunteers were part of a great event, supported local charities, and all volunteers got a FREE T-shirt! You helped make the Waterfront Marathon, Half or 5k, extra special as runners went the distance for an important charity in the community — by running in support of an "Official Charities" or a charity of their choice. September 18 :: The Canadian Paraplegic Association of Ontario’s 10th Annual Toronto Wheelchair Relay Challenge: Wheelin’ with Feelin’
This event is CPA Ontario’s biggest annual fundraiser, which largely contributes to the programs and services needed most by the more than seven people injured in Ontario each week. It was a great day, and food was provided to all volunteers. |
September 10 & 11 :: Tents Up, Tents Down
On September 10 and 11, thousands of women and men walked 60km and raise money to help support breast cancer research and education and Princess Margaret Hospital. Our energetic volunteers helped to set-up tents on Saturday, September 10th from 8am to 1pm and/or took them down on Sunday, September 11th from 11am to 5pm. There were drinks, snacks and volunteer recognition forms for all volunteers. |
Saturday, August 27 :: TVB Keeps Up The Pace at The Bell City Chase
Toronto was host to the Bell City Chase, where teams of two experienced a variety of challenges throughout the city while competing for prizes. TVB volunteers helped man checkpoints, such as the ‘Photo Hut’. This check point required competitors to use Bell Camera Phones to take a number of wild pictures from a checklist, including a non-participant kissing a participant on the lips. Another check point required participants to burn 300 calories at a local Goodlife Fitness Centre as fast as possible. |
Sunday, August 14 :: TVB Helps Keep Toronto Beautiful!
A group of TVBers joined Toronto Bay Initiative made their way out to Toronto’s newest wetland, at the foot of Spadina Avenue, in an effort to keep Toronto beautiful. The gang helped pick up litter as well as remove pesky, non-native weeds and plants, like Queen Anne’s Lace and clover. And like most TVB events, the group got together for drinks afterwards to get to know one another and socialize. |
Thursday, July 21 :: TVB Social at Montana's

Sunday, May 29th :: “Down In The Beach” Walk for Down Syndrome
On Sunday, May 29th, The Down Syndrome Association of Toronto (“DSAT”) held its annual “Walk Down In The Beach” which consisted of a 5K walk, a 1K fun walk, and a Children’s Festival. The event featured an atmosphere of family and fun, beautiful weather, great food, and “the voice” of CityTV, Mark Dailey.
A special thanks goes out to Mary Simms for heading up the TVB effort, and to volunteers Karen, Scott, Mark, and new-comer Stephanie Rodrigues for all of their help and participation at the event.

Thursday, April 22 :: Nazareth House “Fight for Freedom”
On Friday, April 22nd, Nazareth House hosted its 2nd annual “Fight for Freedom”, a charity boxing tournament to raise funds for the house it operates for women between 18 and 50 years of age with a variety of health and lifestyle challenges. The amount raised this year was 60% more than last year, and will enable Nazareth House to replace the home’s roof and front verandah. |
Thursday, March 31 to April 2 :: Bay Street Hoops
On March 31 thru April 2, a number of Toronto Volunteer Bridge volunteers (including a number of first timers!) came out to help the organizers of the Bay Street Hoops charity basketball tournament put on a terrific event. The three-day tournament featured almost 30 teams and raised well over $100,000 for Altruvest Charitable Services and the Special Olympics of Ontario, two great causes.

Thursday, February 17 :: Humewood House Blanket Blitz
TVB volunteers helped add energy and enthusiasm to the Humewood House Blanket Blitz table at Commerce Court. We had a fantastic turnout and raised over $1,300 selling fleece blankets to passers-by. The benefits from the sales went to Humewood House, a resource centre that offers counselling and support to young pregnant women in the Greater Toronto Area. |
