Volunteers Needed for Nazareth House “Fight for Freedom”!
On Friday, April 22nd, Nazareth House is hosting its 2nd annual “Fight for Freedom,” a charity boxing tournament in support of Nazareth House, a house for women between 18 and 50 years of age with a variety of health and lifestyle challenges. Last year, it raised more than $54,000, which enabled the construction of a much-needed new kitchen. This year, they hope to be able to replace the home’s roof and front verandah with the funds raised.
You can learn more about the important work that Nazareth House does by clicking here.
TVB has offered to help find volunteers to help with set-up and tear-down, to sell 50/50 tickets during the event, and for other general assistance. The event lasts from 4:00 p.m. to 11 p.m., but any help during that time would be greatly appreciated, even if you can’t stay for the entire time. The tournament is being held at a hall near Yonge and Davisville, on the subway line.
If you’re interested in signing up with TVB to help out with the “Fight for Freedom,” please phone or e-mail Sandra Elia at 416-955-4282 or elia.sandra@bcg.com.
Also, we are always on the lookout for great volunteering events that need volunteers! If you know of an event that might be a good fit, please contact Toni De Mello at tdemello@hotmail.com.
Bay Street Hoops a “Slam Dunk” Thanks to TVB
On March 31 thru April 2, a number of Toronto Volunteer Bridge volunteers (including a number of first timers!) came out to help the organizers of the Bay Street Hoops charity basketball tournament put on a terrific event. The three-day tournament featured almost 30 teams and raised well over $100,000 for Altruvest Charitable Services and the Special Olympics of Ontario, two great causes.
The TVB volunteers helped direct athletes through the maze of gyms throughout the U of T Athletic Centre (seven courts were in use, in three separate areas), collected scoresheets, and ensured that Gatorade was in plentiful supply. But the best part of volunteering at Bay Street Hoops was our ability to meet new people, hang out, and socialize while watching basketball!
A special thanks goes out to each of the great volunteers that came out to help!
As we’ve said before, one of the great things about volunteering with TVB in general, and the Bay Street Hoops event in particular, was that while it extended over three days, the TVB volunteers came out only as their schedules permitted. Most everyone came out for only one night, but that time was greatly appreciated! That’s why we strive to identify and organize one-day events that anyone can take part in on short notice, and not only make a difference in the community, but also meet like-minded young professionals and have fun while doing it!
Volunteering Across T.O.
In this section of Connections, we let you know about upcoming charitable events because we know you want to be "in the know"! By meeting some of the organizations that feature young professionals, you might find some new volunteering opportunities too!
United Way’s GenNext “Days of Caring” Spring-time Events
TVB is happy to promote the GenNext “Days of Caring” volunteering opportunities. GenNext is a diverse and dynamic group of 21 to 35 year olds who are helping to raise awareness and support the work of United Way of Greater Toronto and its partners by actively developing and participating in volunteer initiatives and fundraising events.
In particular, GenNext is looking for volunteers to help St. Christopher’s House (a community support house at the corner of Dundas and Ossington) with Meals-on-Wheels delivery and adult literacy tutoring. For more information, please contact Jen Woodill, Volunteer Coordinator for St. Christopher’s House, at 416-532-4828 or jenniferwo@stchrishouse.org.
We’ll also keep you apprised of other specific events sponsored by GenNext throughout the year, as they also host a variety of “one-off” events from time to time, just like us!
Framework Foundation Encourages You To “Get In The Picture”
On April 16 at 7:00 p.m., Framework Foundation is hosting its second annual “Timeraiser” art auction, encouraging young people, aged 21-35, to come out and bid on art work in a silent auction with a twist – instead of bidding with money, you bid with a commitment to volunteer hours in the following 12 months. The Timeraiser is a terrific event where you can meet lots of other young professionals, inquire about volunteering opportunities and support the arts community in Toronto.
